What is Meta-Supervision?

As a psychologist, a supervisor must only have 5 years of training to provide supervision, or 2-3 years to supervise practica student based on school requirements. Beyond a practitioner’s own interest and engagement in workshops, there is little to offer for guidance on how to provide effective and ethical supervision.

Meta-Supervision, when a supervisor receives consultation from another clinician regarding their own supervisory practices(1), is a way in which to enhance and expand ones supervisory skills. Research on meta-supervision shows that it positively impacts supervisory dynamics, helps enhance supervisors skills, and has positive organizational impacts(2).
